The Department of Chemistry and Fermentation Sciences remains dedicated to supporting the campus population. We are actively practicing social distancing, which means we remain open for business but we are limiting the number of students, faculty and staff on campus. At this time, we are currently working to provide assistance virtually or by phone. If you need to contact the Chemistry Office , please do so between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. via phone at (828) 262-3010 for the Chemistry office and please e-mail robrtsaj@appstate.edu, or cartayacp@appstate.edu or chemregistration@appstate.edu. If you need to contact the Fermentation Sciences Office, please do so between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. via phone (828) 262-8158 or by email at mcalistercj@appstate.edu.
The A. R. Smith Department of Chemistry and Fermentation Sciences is housed in Garwood Hall at 525 Rivers Street, across the street from the Varsity Gymnasium and adjacent to the new parking deck and Suite 108 Edwin Duncan Hall (Fermentation Sciences). The Main Departmental Office is in GWH 417.
Please browse the information we have provided on this site to learn more about us, and come for a visit to see the facilities in which we work with our students. Submit your online Permit Request
- If your are currently taking the course for which you are seeking a permit, we will issue a permit to retake a lecture or a lab without knowing your final grade. Please note, however, that if you have not passed the co-requisite course you must register for both.
- Some majors require a minimum grade in certain classes in order for them to be credited towards the major requirements, please be sure to check your major requirements with your advisor prior to requesting a permit.

- If a student would like to drop CHE 1101 and the student is taking BIO 1801 they need to use the drop form to ask to keep BIO 1801 and needs to be approved by the BIO department. The co-requisite for BIO 1801 id CHE 1101.
- Student completes the fillable Drop/Add Course Form.
- Student needs to email the completed form to their instructor of the course being dropped. When the student sends the form to the instructor the student needs to copy the following e-mail addresses: Departmental Chairperson (cartayacp@appstate.edu) of the course being dropped, and nelsondj@appstate.edu and pendersca@appstate.edu from the CAS Advising office.
- Both lecture and lab instructors and the departmental chairperson will need to review the request and reply all with their approval or denial of the course drop.
- Once all approvals are received by the CAS office, the drop form will be processed.
- The last day to drop a class by this process is June 10 for Summer I.
